Visiting Idaho

Idaho is nicknamed the Gem State for the diversity of gems found there. However, its natural beauty and wealth of outdoor recreation warrant the moniker as well. Sun Valley, one of the oldest and most recognized ski resorts in the US is located in Idaho, as well as several of the nation's premier whitewater rafting and kayaking rivers. Famous for it's potatoes, Idaho does produce one third of the US potato crop. The state stretches from Bonners Ferry north near the Canadian border, south to Twin Falls and Burley near the Nevada and Utah state lines. Filled with an abundance of activities and exciting sights, Idaho awaits your visit.

Steelhead Season has ended and the town of Riggins celebrates at the end of March. Riggins sponsors the Steelhead Derby through March 27th, culminating with a dinner, dance and auction. (If you need another good excuse to fish, there is a cash prize for the winner.) Mid April, Riggins is the site of the 2010 Salmon River Jet Boat Races. An exciting event over three days featuring  racing boat shows and races. Plan now for the annual Riggins Rodeo and Parade, the first of May. An early season rodeo with seven main events as well as local barrel racing and steer riding. Bring the family to enjoy the parade and cowboy breakfast along with the rodeo action.

Idaho Trivia: Boise is Idaho's capital, and the Boise-Napa metro area is the largest population concentration in the state. Known as the City of Trees, home of the Boise State Bronco's sports and the NBA minor league Idaho Stampede, Boise has many unique offerings.

Author Michael Chabon will be in Boise at The Cabin on April 7th, one of several acclaimed authors scheduled in the annual Readings and Conversations lecture series. The Cabin is a center for writing and reading, located in a restored log cabin in the downtown area. Rare among American cities, the center is also a participant in the National Endowment of the Arts 2010 Big Read. Look for events and activities around this years selection; To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Runners can participate in the toughest race in the northwest at high noon on April 17th. The Race to Robie Creek is is a half marathon starting at the Fort Boise Community Center with an immediate climb up Shaw Mountain Road. Perhaps you will want to wait for June and the Main Street Mile - “A Mile for Men's Health”. Flat and one mile, there is no excuse not to join in. The kids event is led by the ice cream truck which opens at the end – now that is motivation to move.

May brings bird-watching events throughout the state. Riggins hosts a beginning workshop for bird watchers, the International Migratory Bird Day Festival is in Boise, and the Snake River Birds of Prey Festival is mid-May in Kuna. The Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area in southwest Idaho is the Nations largest nesting area for birds of prey. An inspiring opportunity to see falcons, eagles, owls, and hawks during nesting season.
